Abstract

The somatic hybrid plants were obtained from protoplast fusion between Solanum brevidens and several clones of S. tuberosum (¢¥Superior¢¥, ¢¥Dejima¢¥, and dihaploid of ¢¥Superior¢¥). Somatic hybrid plants generally grew more vigorously and had broader leaves than common potato cultivars. Overall morphological characteristics of the somatic hybrids were intermediate of the parents. Tetraploid somatic hybrids had closer morphological similarity to S. brevidens than the hexaploid hybrids did. As for the characteristics of tuber formation, somatic hybrids were late-maturing of 130 days and most of the somatic hybrids produced normal tubers as compared with S. brevidens which yielded no tuber. The hybrids produced relatively long in tuber shape and many of them were abnormal in tuber shape. Tubers of the hexaploid somatic hybrids were larger in size than the tetraploids. There was a wide variation in morphology such as leaf, tuber or reproductive organs among the hybrids, although they were originated from the same parents.
